Early Life & Childhood

Calvin Richard Klein was born on the 19th of November, 1942 to a Jewish family in the Bronx, New York.

His love for fashion dates back to days in his childhood following several visits to his maternal grandmothers tailoring shop which ignited a spark in his passion for clothes and design thereby kick-starting his artistic dreams to be a fashion designer. He started by sketching fashion designs.

He studied at the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan and further attended the New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology where he graduated in 1962.

Career

Shortly after graduation, he worked as an apprentice for a Cloak and Suit manufacturer, Dan Millstein, earning $75 per week for his sketch designs and sewing.  He worked under him for 5 years.

He started his label, Calvin Klein Ltd, in 1968 with the help of his childhood friend, Barry Schwartz, who at that time had just taken over his family grocery store. They became business partners. He launched his label with $12,000 ($10,000 loan from Schwartz and $2,000 from his savings).

He rented a small showroom in a large New York Clothing store, Bonwit Teller. He got his first hit sale from a coat buyer from Bonwit Teller who made a huge order worth $50,000 being intrigued by his stunning coat designs.

This earned him undaunted reviews from the public and fashion press. At this time, he was majorly into coat designs. The store executives were impressed with his work and encouraged him to expand his line to sportswear as well.

Calvin Klein Company grew dramatically in 1971. He expanded his clothing line beyond coat designs to include sportswear, classic blazers, and lingerie in its women’s collection.

He further extended into the couture line-up that provided its female customers’ highly fashionable custom-made attires.

In 1974, Klein designed the tight-fitting signature jeans that would go on to gross $200,000 in their first week of sales.
